When Isaac pushed open the door to Pete’s hospital room, he saw his partner push the lunch tray away in disgust.

“How perfect is my timing?” he said, holding up the nondescript white paper bag.

Pete’s eyes lit up like the sun and he pointed to the bag. “Pulled pork nachos from the food truck?”

“Am I the best partner or what?” Isaac said, stepping further into the room.

“Oh, my God, you’re the greatest!”

Isaac handed over the bag and tried not to laugh as he watched Pete rip into it. The satisfied smile that came with Pete’s first bite made him chuckle.

“How you doing?” Isaac asked, taking a seat on the stool near Pete’s bed.

Pete swallowed his mouthful. “They say I’m doing great. My vitals are steady. My surgical incision looks good. They took the drain tube out early this morning. Doc said they just want me to be here for another day or so to make sure no infection sets in; no complications of any kind.”

Isaac nodded. “Sounds good.”

Pete grunted. “I’m hoping they’ll let me go tomorrow.”

“Has anyone mentioned discharging you tomorrow?”

“No,” Pete admitted. “I’m just hoping they will. I mean, I can heal up just as well from the comfort of my own house, you know?”

Isaac twisted his lips. “Mmm, maybe not, man. Don’t rush it.”

“How’s the case coming?” Pete asked, licking his fingers.

“Moving right along,” Isaac replied. “We’ve identified the third dirtbag from the footage. Name is Ronnie Coulter. We still can’t find him or Bruce, though, so I’ve got an APB out at all area law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout, and I’ve enlisted Janelle Mandrake’s help in getting their faces out to the public.”

“Yeah, I caught the tail end of that on the news just a little while ago,” Pete pointed to the TV. “You really think these two fled the area?”

“Wouldn’t you?”

“Hell yeah. I mean, not only are they wanted for the hate crimes, but now two of their victims have died, and they’ve just shot a cop.”

“Exactly.” Isaac nodded. “So I’ve sent plain clothed patrolmen to all points of exit in the city. I’ve covered air ports, bus terminals, and train stations. I’ve even got them staked out at the docks and the water taxi stations. No one claims to have seen these two. But we’ll get them. In fact, just before I left to come here I extended that BOLO throughout the country. Just in case they managed to get out before I locked down the city. It’s a national manhunt now.”

Pete balled up the empty nacho bag and nodded. He was silent for a moment, but Isaac could see him thinking. He wondered what was going through his mind.

“You know, Ike… one of the good things about making detective was that I didn’t have to worry about wearing that damn protective vest everyday anymore.”

Isaac nodded, but he didn’t reply.

“I mean, as detectives we really don’t have to worry too much about being shot at.”

Isaac nodded again. “Not like we did back when we were still in uniform, no.
